Bye-Bye Vlans, Hello Layer 3 Connectivity
For a long time we lived with layer 2, vlans and MAC addresses for server connectivity. Instead of advancing to layer 3, we got overlay networks which emulate layer 2 on top of a layer 3 underlay network.
But what if I told you, you don’t need the added complexity in the network? You can use layer 3 to directly connect your servers (and VMs) today. I will explain the basics of BGP unnumbered, ECMP, Linux dummy Interfaces and local firewalling.
