Making Things Happen in Debian: Reflections from two DPL terms

Over the past two years as Debian Project Leader, I’ve been involved in many parts of Debian’s day-to-day work and coordination. This talk is a reflection on that experience and on how Debian functions as a do-ocracy and a global volunteer project.

I’ll discuss what I set out to do, what we were able to accomplish together, and where things turned out to be more difficult than expected. The talk will look at what helps collaboration work well in Debian, where friction can arise, and what it means to coordinate a large, diverse project without formal hierarchies.

I’ll also reflect on how Debian deals with change - in technology, community dynamics, and shared understandings - while remaining grounded in its core values. While based on my time as DPL, the focus is on the project and its structures, with the aim of sharing observations that may be useful for other long-running, volunteer-driven free software communities.
